US BUILDING SECURITY
Large Scale Test Structure
TEST STRUCTURE:

  • Newly constructed structure, designed to fit the specific needs of the GSA.
  • Available to government organizations and non-government entities without additional test structure use fee.
  • Can accommodate ISC Security Design Criteria High Level of Protection explosive loads.
  • 24 ft wide x 14 ft high test sample (clear) opening.
  • Capable of testing full-scale curtainwall systems, wall systems and window/door/wall combinations.
  • Modular construction provides an expandable test sample opening for testing even larger samples.
  • Test structure opening can be segmented, allowing multiple systems to be tested simultaneously.
  •
    TEST SITE:

The test site, located in Socorro, New Mexico is jointly operated by ARA and the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. The GSA maintains testing infrastructure at the site.

Explosive charges of up to 2,000 lb TNT equivalent can be accommodated at the site. Up to 20,000 lb TNT charge sizes can be accommodated at neighboring sites on the test complex.

The site is fully instrumented with state-of-the-art data acquisition and high speed video equipment. All tests are performed by experienced engineers and technicians.

    ARRANGING FOR EXPLOSIVE TESTS:

  • The first step is to contact ARA and discuss your requirements for testing.
  • ARA will work with you to develop a test matrix that meets your overall project / organizational goals in the most efficient manner possible. This may involve a single test, or multiple tests…use of a single test structure, or multiple test structures…testing to a single load, or multiple load levels. Test sample sizes and configurations will be determined.
  • ARA will develop a scope of work and cost proposal using the final test matrix.
(Please note that in addition to the standard test fees, nominal test structure use fees will be applied for each of the Smaller Test Structures. This additional fee is not assessed on the Large Test Structure, as it is provided courtesy of GSA.)
  • ARA will work with you to develop a timeline that fits within the overall project schedule. Due to the number of parties involved, large scale explosive testing generally requires a several month lead-time so plan early.
  • ARA will assist in locating a manufacturer to fabricate and ship your test samples if necessary.
  • ARA will coordinate all testing and keep you abreast of the status of test preparations.
